SGD Tofu House – San Jose, CA

CL got in from Edmonton at about 9 pm and mentioned she wanted soup or ramen of some kind when she lands; which normally would have been quite a challenge because not a lot of places I know opens late. I noticed this tofu house a couple months back and have been wanting to try it out because I loved their Santa Clara location.

It was always packed during dinner times but only a handful of tables were occupied on a Saturday night. Seats a little over two dozen ppl – not a very big place.

Menu had all the mainstream Korean favourites~

.

We had:

Ban Chan

The ban chan were OK. Potatoes were a little al dente and kimchi was very saucy but other than that, the rest tasted like the usual.

.

Seafood Soft Tofu $9.95

Best dish of the night! I am always partial to tofu stews that are more on the thick side (it is suppose to be a stew). The stew had a very well developed seafood broth and generous amounts of small shrimp, clams and tofu. We polished this off easily as it was delicious with rice!! Just the right amount of seasoning and definitely hit the spot on a chilly night.

.

Dolsot Bibimbap $13.95

I saw this dish on another table and just HAD to order it.

Unlike the usual stone bowls, this was served in a flatter wider “bowl” that is shaped like a Paella pan and seemed to be cast iron instead of stone. It definitely crisped up the rice very well and kept the rice nice and hot for quite a while. Generous amounts of topping and the side sauce was good as well.

.

BBQ Short Rib in Hot Platter $15.95

Not as tender as I would have liked but well marinated – just the right balance of sweet and salty. It was missing the nice smokiness from the grill.

.

Extras:
2 cokes

.

.

Total Damage: ~$60 (including tax & tip)

Personal Rating: 3.5 out of 5 (Very good)

Food was good but not as good as the SGD on El Camino BUT it opens till midnight so that is a major plus on its own. Prices were at par with other Korean joints and portions were generous. I was looking forward to some Seafood Pancake (the one we had at the El Camino was great!!) but they were out of it. *tear*

We got in at about 930 pm on a Saturday and it was surprisingly empty but the service was quite slow since one guy was serving the whole restaurant – he did everything from taking orders, servings, manage cash register and take outs! He was really nice though and eventhough he looked a tad disheveled trying to keep up with the needs of half a dozen tables he was still polite and got us everything we needed.
