The moment we landed in San Diego, we picked up our rental car and drove an hour over to Temecula to meet up w JR and new baby E! I knew she was craving sushi during her pregnancy so we offered to bring over lunch. Looking back, I should have asked her where to go pick up sushi coz when I tried to look up Temecula on Yelp, I found nothing close by except Sushi Boat.
We didn’t expect it to be a restaurant attached to a giant mall and I was a tad worried when I saw that this was a chain but we walked in anyways. The plan was to get a party tray.
Menu is insanely long, this is the to go menu since we didn’t dine in and ordered to go (please excuse the wrinkled pages).
There was about 3 dozen different kind of rolls! Isn’t that insane?
We almost ordered one of the party trays but after I did the math, the party trays were a crap deal so I ordered a la carte.
We ordered:
Mixed Tempura $5.95
In all fairness, by the time we ate the tempura it was cold and soggy so I can’t say much about it. But the mixed tempura came with squash, broccoli, carrot and shrimp.
.
Shrimp Tempura $5.95
The shrimp was overdone with a very thick tempura batter.
.
Sashimi Gold Combo $37.75
25 pieces of assorted fish: Albacore Tuna, Mackerel, Red Snapper, Halibut, Fatty Tuna, Salmon, Escolar (White Tuna), Squid
I was impressed with the offerings: I thought the Escolar, Fatty Tuna and Salmon were all great quality and fresh. The other fish were mediocre and the mackerel and halibut was quite fishy.
.
Crunch Scallop $10.95
Deep fried scallop and Spicy tuna roll topped with Tempura Bay Scallop
This roll came highly recommended by the server but by the time we had it, the bay scallops were cold and soggy so not that satisfying. The bay scallop was definitely frozen at some point and was pretty fishy so we ended up eating most of the roll.
.
Dragon $8.75, Rainbow $8.95
Dragon: Shrimp tempura, cucumber, asparagus roll topped with eel, avocado, tobiko and unagi sauce
Rainbow: California roll topped with Albacore, Maguro, Halibut, Shrimp, Escolar/White Tuna & Salmon
The dragon roll was delicious, well made with sweet salty unagi sauce and creamy avocado. The rainbow roll was a tad disappointing – the fish were OK but the roll itself was lacking, the california roll under tasted pretty bland.
.
Golden Gate $11.75
California roll wrapped in salmon, topped with scallops, mayo and special house sauce and baked.
I am horrible but this was my favourite roll! Sweet creamy mayo baked and salmon made the california roll so much better! It was pretty bland on its own. Again, the bay scallops on top were pretty meh… rubbery and a tad fishy.

Total Damage: $97.03 (including tax)
Personal Rating: 2.75 (Average)
Pretty decent sushi, some of it was reminiscent of food court sushi. Something random though, I was planning to order a party tray since we were not sure what everyone would like but after doing the math – I realised that the party tray is actually MORE expensive than ordering the exact same thing offered in the combination ala carte. For the same price, I ended up with  more food by ordering separately. I was baffled!
It was a lot of food for pretty decent price and of average quality. I didn’t expect Sushi Boat to be a chain (so strange for a sit down Japanese restaurant!).
