Joya – Palo Alto, CA

5 of us headed out to JOYA in Palo Alto on Saturday.  We ordered 6 tapas and 1 seafood paella and shared everything.

1st up – Fried calamari w chile salt $10

This was good. Lightly battered and seasoned well. Nothing exciting but generous portion.

.

Ahi tuna tartare $13.50

This was the best part of the meal! The tuna had great colour, texture and the right amount of seasoning. The guacamole was creamy and went well with the crispy taro chips.

.

Sun dried tomato trapenade $8.50

I was indifferent to this, it was boring…

.

Seared spanish sausages $9

Chorizo, blood sausage (SOOO GOOODD) and tiny sausages

.

Seafood paella $46

This is supposed to be an entree for 2 but we soon realised FOUR ppl would be needed to finish this even if they did not eat as much as we did before this arrived… This was very flavourful and full of seafood but a little too salty

.

Braised short rib taco $9.50

I think the waitress forgot bout this coz it took a while. Meep dint like this at all. I found it salty, soggy, missing any sort of fresh veg or crunch AND overall BORING

.

Flamenco eggs $9

This was a little disappointing as well. The egg I felt would be better cooking in w the peppers n stuff. I did not even taste the chorizo..

Total Damage – $260 (includes 1 pitcher sangria, 4 drinks, tax & tip)

Personal rating – 3 stars out of 5 (Good food, poor service)

We were stuffed and happy after all that food and sangria. But I have to s the price of the drinks were a little ridiculous. It was ten bucks a pop for the jack daniels with coke and ten bucks for sangria as well. If that wasn’t bad enough, I could not even taste the alcohol in the Sangria.

Service was a little lacking. Our server disappears for long periods of time and takes forever to bring us refills. She also seem to have forgotten one of our orders coz it never came until we asked and finally got it after over an hour (way after the paella, which we were told wud take almost 40 mins)

We headed to Melt, a few blocks away for a couple more drinks and dancing~
