Mellben Seafood – Singapore

I was craving chili crab long before I even arrived in Singapore. From the very first day I go there, I told my friends we had to find a restaurant with good chili crab. A childhood friend who moved to Singapore about 8 years ago, brought us to Mellben Seafood in Ang Mo Kio.

The restaurant was massive and quite busy, which is always a good sign!

There are indoor and outdoor seatings~ Inside, the walls are decorated by signed crab shells. I don’t read chinese, so I have no clue who those signatures belong to. 🙂

The menu has an insane amount of choices with one full page of crab selections.

There are also other seafood, vegetable and meat choices.

I did not appreciate the fact that the menu has no prices, not even for the meat/vegetable dishes. So I had no idea what the bill would be like.

Golden Mushrooms & Vegetable

Simple stir fry of assorted mushrooms, cooked well and tasted pretty good.

Claypot Crab Bee Hoon Soup

Look at the delicious roe/brains

I was surprised that the “bee hoon” were not the typical fine rice noodles. Instead, they were thick white noodles (like thick white spaghetti).

I was surprised at how light the soup was, considering it has coconut milk and curry. This is apparently the local favourite but I preferred the chili crab.

Chili Crab

Crab in thick delicious eggy sweet salty spicy gravy! Perfect over rice or with the deep fried mini mantous we ordered. I could not get enough of the gravy, and I am not even a fan of spicy food. Warning tho, at some point it is hard to get the full flavour of the gravy because all you taste is heat.

Mini mantous fried to perfection! It is used to sop up the delicious gravy from the Chili Crab. It was nice and crispy on the outside without the insides absorbing any oil so it stayed nice and fluffy in the centre.

Guinness Stout Pork Ribs

I went on and on about wanting to go for Chili Crab but this dish ended up being my favourite of the night. Sweet, salty and slightly tangy – The meat was not fall off the bone and actually had a nice bite to it. It was still easy to get off the bone but not the usually braised ribs where the meat falls apart. It holds together well and has to be eaten with bare hands.

Everything was really tasty; they came to the table fresh and piping hot. Service is as expected of most Chinese restaurants; barely there. You have to flag down service but they are quite efficient once you let them know what you want/need. Food came out really fast as well. 🙂
