SGD Tofu House – Santa Clara, CA

I always noticed the tofu house sign when I head to Lawrence Plaza on the other side of El Camino. I looked it up and was surprised this is the SGD Tofu House I have heard from a couple friends. I almost missed out on this place because it doesn’t say SGD on the sign (indoors or outdoors)

The restaurant is big, bright and bustling. I felt weird and rushed to begin when we walked in. The moment we entered the door; we got menus and a number. Then after 5 minutes a lady took our orders even before we are seated. We waited for another 5 minutes, before our number was called and we were seated.

Cute corner with pictures drawn by little kids. And chairs fitted w tennis balls! So random.

Menu is very simple, quite short but good enough selection so there is something for everyone.

We ordered:

Ban Chan

The ban chan was pretty good. It is fairly inconsistent because some tables have more while others have less. I loved the cuttlefish in spicy sauce and pickled cucumbers.

.

Seafood Pancake $13.27

Our jaws dropped when this was placed in front of us. Huge portion, enough for 6 people. I thought it was a tad pricey, then when we got it – it made sense.

The pancake was delicious. Very crispy on the outside, soft and doughy in the centre with nice and tender chunks of octopus and shrimp. There was a good amount of green onions and slivers of carrots as well.

.

Beef Short Ribs $16.48

Pretty Good. A little tougher than I expected but marinated very well. Sweet and salty with a nice smoky flavour from the grill.

.

Original Pork Soft Tofu $10.53

Best tofu soup that I have had to date. This might sound crazy but a little too much tofu in here. The soup is thick, flavourful and filled with bits of pork, mushrooms and a lot of tofu.

It was bubbling and perfect for cracking an egg. We got medium heat and it was spicy but a good spicy (I doubt I could go any spicier)

.

Rice

I loved the fact that we got purple (wild) rice. Makes the meal a lot better – perfectly cooked purple rice!

.

Rice Tea

Offered for tables with dishes that come w rice.

I have always found this a little strange. Water is poured into the stone bowl that holds the rice. The bottom is to be burnt and after the meal, the water would have softened the crust. scrap mix and eat. Quite refreshing for the palate, kinda like smoky barley. The rice wasn’t as burnt as I expected so it had less flavour but Meep really enjoyed it.

Total Damage: $52 (including tax& tip)

Personal Rating: 3.5 out of 5 (Pretty Darn Good)

The service at this place is nothing but mindblowing. It is not the usual friendly all smiles service BUT it is crazy efficient. They have this sytem and they work like machines. Orders taken at the door, the moment we sat down we got place mats and drinks.

Then we got a nice range of ban chan soon after sitting down, then the food came shortly; one at a time. Then a lady pushes around a car with rice and starts plopping down rice & rice tea at tables that just got their main dishes.

They are really good with re-filling the ban chans and water as well.

Prices are a lot higher than other korean restaurants offering the same dishes but the food does speak for itself. And the portions are pretty good for the price as well.  Meep actually decided this is now our number 1 place to go.
