Won Jung Gak, Edmonton, AB

Lately, I have been traveling back home to Edmonton a lot. One of the things that I look forward to most is going to Won Jung Gak. A good friend of S’s introduced him to the place, and in turn, I was introduced to this place, and I’m nothing but thankful!

I must admit, I was a little skeptical at first. Korean food is not traditionally one of my favorites, or wasn’t, until I tried Won Jung Gak. There are two locations, and the original location is a little bit sketchy, but what a gem!!

Service Button

This is a button located on every table. You push it, and it calls the server. Or is supposed to… We tried it and if it worked is still debatable. Regardless, a great idea!

Check out our food:

Half Portion of Noodles with Korean Style Black Bean Sauce and Half Portion of Noodles in Spicy Seafood Soup

This is S’s dish. He often orders this, and the soup is VERY spicy. I always think that mine is spicy, and it immediately becomes less spicy when I taste some of his. Funny how that works! I love the bowl it comes in. The spicy soup is nicely balanced out with the black bean noodles. He loves it, and I think it’s pretty tasty myself.

Noodles in Spicy Soup with Beef

This is MY dish. I’m literally salivating as I write this post. It’s what my dreams are made of. Seriously, I love it. My favorite food in life is soup, and I have had a fair bit of it in my lifetime. Let me tell you, this is one of my favorite soups of all time. Delicious. Try it. It’s spicy, but oh so tasty.

Spicy Deep Fried Chicken

This is a must try dish as well. We always order the large, because it’s only a few dollars more and makes for great leftovers. This dish comes with scissors so you can cut the chicken up into bite size pieces. It’s spicy as well, but great. Everyone I know who has tried this always orders it again. Regardless of how much food we have ordered, we will always make room for this dish.

Water Canister & Tea Pot

With all these spicy dishes, beverages are a must! Here is a picture of their tea pot and their clever water canister! Trust me, you will be thankful for this device. One glass of water won’t be enough!

The Damage

Total Damage: $45.65 (including tax, no tip).

Personal Rating: 4.25 out of 5 (Delicious!)

Ok, so it’s rare that I give out such a high rating for somewhere that is not considered high end or fine dining. Maybe I’m just really hungry right now and missing home, but this is a MUST when I go back to Edmonton. Try it out! There are two different locations now, and both are delicious.

The service is not taken into consideration when rating Won Jung Gak. It’s nothing special and certainly not why I continue to go back. It’s also not terrible. The servers there serve their purpose. Serving delicious, delicious spicy goodness to me at the quickest rate possible. And for that, I am eternally grateful.
